Think Pink

having spent most of the day outside
 in rain and sun
quietly hoeing between the dwarf beans
pulling weeds between the beetroot and the spring onions
planting out the runner beans (finally!) already twined together
clearing the greenhouse border of the last winter lettuces
(in readiness for the towering tomato plants that should have already gone in, as most of them are now flowering)
tieing in the peas which have lots of swelling pods but are draped all over the place after the winds of the last few days
sampling fresh peas from the pod - they were so sweet and some are just about big enough for eating now
pulling a few slender stalks of red rhubarb and finding the the most beautiful bright pink ends-where-you-pull-it-out

I now have the urge to share the following feast for the eyes
as those rhubarb ends made me
THINK PINK!!!

What a wonderful setting
for a leisurely meal - so simple and pretty

A very warm welcome to the new followers who have come along for the journey!
It is getting very close now to a giveaway I feel.

Whoops!!!!
Feels like a Friday to me - this post was published first as "A Friday Feast" but my kind and observant daughter has just pointed out to me that it is in fact only Thursday - so now I have a pink face to add to the pinkness of todays post!!!

He he!!!!!! (blush)

A bit of This and That

At the weekend I received another belated Birthday present.

It is a gorgeous Gisela Graham gardening bag, made from strong brightly patterned cotton canvas, with lots of useful pockets round the outside for secateurs, string etc.

Thanks Sis!!

This lovely cheerful braid arrived a few days ago, to add to my stash - not sure what it will be for, but I couldnt resist that bright orangy red and green - vintage in style, and a very good price off eBay.

This last week has seen a few new book treasures arrive at the front door, courtesy of  Amazon and our kindly postman.

Firstly, last week, this little French gem appeared

Despite it being in French, and my French being pretty basic, its really about the beautiful pictures and the ideas. Each project is shown in a beautiful French shabby chic room setting. The instructions are quite minimal so it is more important to be able to sew than to speak French I would say.

Luckily, my sewing is better than my French, and there are a few basic construction sketches with each project, together with a few templates at the back, which are all you require for most of the projects should you wish to make them.

Which I do.
If I had all the time in the world.
Which I don't.
So.

It will be read and admired and gloated over at bedtime, and then will drop from my sleepy clasp as I drift off dreaming of all the lovely things I shall make. If I had time. Which I don't. Hmm.

The next day, this arrived.

No camera, so book covers are all courtesy of Amazon where you can purchase it of course!

After writing a post about Painted Furniture a few weeks back, a kindly blogger recomended Annie Sloan paints as being "the biz" as no preparation is required, just paint and go.

So I thought I'd have a look at what Annie Sloan has been writing recently and I came across the above, which is both useful and inspiring. Well worth buying if you want to tackle some painting projects and aren't sure where to start, as it gives step by step illustrated instructions, tips and know how, and a finished picture to work towards. Shows you how to achieve wonderfully distressed pieces, and is inspirational to both the beginner and the more experienced distresser-of- furniture.

It also lists stockists of her paint.

On the basis that I have a friends 50th Birthday Party to give in the summer, just a small one for her close family and parents coming over from the US, I thought the following book might be inspirational.

That is one of the events I was referring to a few posts ago when I was asking for entertaining ideas! So as well as all those wonderful ideas you all shared wth me in your comments (which I will be taking on board for sure), this should help too.

It arrived today, and I've had a quick peek!

It is indeed inspirational, it has some lovely French style ideas, simple and hopefully achievable, for both food and for decorating the table, and the garden.

And this beauty is still to come

I can hardly wait!

A few sweet things

A little sweetness to share with you this Tuesday evening..........

More sweetness...........

Eton Mess - my quick version

(Serves 3 - 4)

6 to 8 ready made meringue nests
300ml double cream
approx 200g strawberries

To make
Whip the cream in a large bowl until it makes soft peaks.
Crumble the meringues into the cream and stir.
Puree approx 200g strawberries with a little water and sugar to taste (approx 1 small tblsp), then stir half the sauce through cream and meringue mix.

To serve
Place serving in a pretty glass dish, sprinkle over chopped strawberries if wished, and pour over more strawberry sauce.

NB: you could also stir in chopped strawberries to the "mess" with the sauce, as well as adding on top.

*

We had the above for pudding last night, without any additional strawberries, just the sauce stirred through then more on top, and it was real comfort food - yummy!

*

When my daughter was little, and I said I was making this for pudding, she was a little unsure and sceptical as she thought it meant "eaten mess" and quite rightly she wasn't sure she fancied it!!!

Still on the subject of strawberries, am hoping to go strawberry picking at the local farm in the next few days to buy enough for jam making.

***

Have just added a few Applique Door Stops to my Gillyflower's Handmade and Vintage Shop if anyone needs one during this windy weather!

These are the last few left over from the last summer fair, but I can make more to order.

The last photo in the "shop" is a rather blurry one of the one I have in my kitchen - no camera to take a decent shot of one "in use" .

Summer time.............

and the living is easy.........

and I am aware of some summer entertaining coming up soon, other than the usual informal friends and family gatherings that I tend to not worry about...........

that will require a little more thought and preparation............

So.........

if anyone has any favourite, foolproof and simple food and drink suggestions...........

or table decorations, or simple, pretty ideas to decorate the garden a little...........

for summer outdoor entertaining...............

I will be most grateful

(as I seem to do the same old food every time and am in desperate need of a little inspiration here before I wade through the cookery books and get completely confused and bogged down!!!!)
